WHY WE LOVE THEM

Drew’s
choice
DESTINY 2
The hand cannon-
wielding scourge of
the Solar System has
returned after two years of exile.
Lock up your Ghosts: I’m back
haunting the Crucible. Rally to the
flag: I’ll be in the public zones
popping off precision kills.

Adam’s
choice
RESIDENT EVIL 2
With the official
announcement of a
Resident Evil Netflix
series, I’ve been inspired to enter
the halls of the Racoon City Police
Department HQ once again. Let’s
hope the upcoming series is as
good as this remake.

THE BEST FILMS AND TV THIS MONTH

films tv

SUGAR RUSH S2
FOR FANS OF The Great British Bake-Off
Netflix’s baking show is back for another
season, led by cupcake queen Candace
Nelson and eccentric chef Adriano Zumbo.
Four teams are pitted against each other
as they make cakes and confections
around themes such as fire and first dates.

THE RED SEA
DIVING RESORT
FOR FANS OF Homeland, 24
In this portrayal of the Operation Brothers
mission, Chris Evans plays a Mossad agent
tasked with smuggling Ethiopian Jewish
refugees to Israel. It’s a thrilling action flick
and a contemplative study of war.

PEAKY BLINDERS S5
FOR FANS OF The Wire
The stylish drama returned this month,
reuniting us with the Shelby gang two years
after its showdown with Luca Changretta’s
mafia. Broodingly acted, gorgeously lit and
shockingly violent, Peaky Blinders’ new
season is shaping up to be the best yet.

OVERLORD
FOR FANS OF Black Mirror
This period thriller sees a group of
American soldiers seeking out their
comrades in France but stumbling upon a
Nazi base of super-soldiers. Silly and
shambolic punk-rock horror that’s perfect
for a Saturday night.

MINDHUNTER S2
FOR FANS OF Hannibal
The first season of David Fincher’s
Mindhunter landed on Netflix almost two
years ago: a meticulous deep dive into the
FBI of the ’70s. Finally season two is here,
throwing agent Holden into the laps of
psychopaths such as Charles Manson.

A STAR IS BORN
FOR FANS OF Crazy Heart
Lady Gaga is stunning in the role of a young
performer who gets her lucky break when
she’s discovered by a jaded country rock
star. Exploring the addictive side of fame
and the way jealousy tears lovers apart,
A Star Is Born will shatter hearts.

THIS WAY UP
FOR FANS OF Fleabag, Russian Doll
Irish comedian Aisling Bea writes and stars
in this six-part series about a young teacher
trying to piece her life back together after a
nervous breakdown. Brilliantly written and
poignantly acted, This Way Up could be the
greatest breakout series of the year.

THE GIRL IN THE
SPIDER’S WEB
FOR FANS OF Red Sparrow
Claire Foy steps into the boots of Lisbeth
Salander for this belated sequel. While this
foray loses some of the original’s icy aura,
it’s fun to watch Foy string up creeps and
crash her motorcycle through the snow.

GLOW S3
FOR FANS OF Orange Is The New Black
If you haven’t been watching Glow, the
third season is a perfect excuse to jump in.
The female-fronted show of a generation,
it explores sisterhood, fame and sexuality
through a lens of glitter, pro wrestling and
bad ’80s hair.

FIRST MAN
FOR FANS OF Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind
La La Land director Damian Chazelle dials
down the glitz for this intimate gaze at the
life of Neil Armstrong as he prepares for the
moon landing. Instead of framing it as an
epic American tale, Chazelle peels back the
layers to look at the vulnerable family man.

DARK CRYSTAL:
AGE OF RESISTANCE
FOR FANS OF Labyrinth, Coraline
If Jim Henson’s Dark Crystal was a beloved
part of your childhood, you’ll be happy to
know that Netflix has made a prequel
series. Age Of Resistance whisks us to the
planet Thra to save it from the evil Skeksis.

BEAUTIFUL BOY
FOR FANS OF Moonlight, Ladybird
In this portrait of a strained relationship,
Timothée Chalamet plays a recovering
young addict trying to reconnect with his
father. Steve Carrell proves once again that
he can do more than comedy while
Chalamet echoes a young DiCaprio.

Chris’
choice
WOLFENSTEIN:
YOUNGBLOOD
As a fan of id’s classic
shooter series I
couldn’t wait to get hold of the latest
Nazi-killing instalment. It’s pretty
much got all of Wolfie’s best bits, like
shooting stuff with big guns, plus it’s
(young-) bloody good fun in co-op.
