“This [still life] explores the subjects of everyday life—familiar objects and the
space that continually changes according to the light. It seems very simple, but
it’s in everyday life where all the unique stories are kept. Winter Breakfast is my
usual morning: a French press, which is already many years old, and a white
mug, once bought for still lifes and accustomed to the kitchen, and—of course—
the special winter morning light, cold and piercing. The glow of light and the
depth of shadows that formed around the objects created the basis of the study.”

“My concept for this
piece was to create an
interesting, strong por-
trait of a mature woman.
I was inspired by my
model’s blown-out silvery/
golden hair and her blue
eyes. I used my favorite
Metropolitan Museum
shawl with vivid colors
and fringe to wrap her
casually and present her
hands. I worked on a cus-
tom Ampersand board.”
