In Memoriam


In her 2013 autobiog-
raphy, Dare to Dream,
Urania Christy Tarbet
recommends making
space for dreams.
“If a dream is kept
under a basket, it
will surely die from
lack of sunlight,” she
wrote. Tarbet, who passed away on
July 4, lived into plenty of dreams.
One of the boldest was her vision of
an organization that could, in her
own words, “bring pastel societies
together to create a mighty voice,
offer education and bring attention
to the qualities and longevity of pas-
tel.” With her characteristic spunk
and determination, she turned that
vision into reality with the founding
of the International Association of
Pastel Societies (IAPS) in 1994.
The organization has flourished,
and the medium of pastel—which

she loved so much—continues to
expand its reach to artists and enthu-
siasts around the world. Current IAPS
President, Richard McKinley, says,
“Personally, I will miss the twinkle in
her eye and the wit of her conversation.
Those of us who knew her as a friend

will always remember how much she
touched our lives, but everyone work-
ing in the medium has been affected
by her advancement of pastel.”
When I attended my first IAPS
convention in 2007, Urania invited
me to lunch on one of the first days.
