Bag a bit of TV history as
Doc Martin’s Cornish house goes
on sale — gawpers not included

A

new owner is being
sought for Doc
Martin’s surgery —
curmudgeonly
demeanour optional.
The fictional Cornish
home of Dr Martin
Ellingham, played
by Martin Clunes, is on the market.
Fern Cottage, a grade II listed
double-fronted fisherman’s cottage on
Roscarrock Hill above Port Isaac
harbour, has regularly appeared as the
Doc’s surgery and home for the 18 years
the ITV series has been on the air.
With filming under way for what is
said to be the final series, the owners
of the two-bedroom cottage,
which makes a healthy 5 per
cent return as a holiday let
(charging an average of
£355 a night on Vrbo), are
selling the property for
£1.25 million with John Bray
Estates. It is being offered
furnished and as a business
with a branded website.
Viewers, and tourists who take Port
Isaac’s popular Doc Martin walking tour,
will be familiar with the cottage’s
traditional stone façade, but few will
have seen inside; interior shots are
filmed on set at nearby Roscarrock
Farm. Downstairs there is a small sitting
room with a stone fireplace, beamed
ceiling and slate flagged floor. There is
also a dining room with a log-burner and
a modern galley kitchen. Upstairs are
two double bedrooms and a bathroom.
To the front there is parking for two
cars, and behind is a steep tiered garden.
Port Isaac, known as Portwenn in the
Doc Martin series, is a small Cornish
fishing village with a big reputation. It

has also played host to film crews for
Poldark, Fisherman’s Friends, Saving
Grace, The Shell Seekers and Amy Foster.
It isn’t just a set, though. It is a
traditional fishing village with steep
winding streets — including the aptly
named Squeezy Belly Alley — and a
working harbour. There are plenty of
shops, cafés and restaurants too,
including two Nathan Outlaw eateries.
The renowned chef is opening a
guesthouse in the village in May.
The village has a wide variety of
property, from the traditional cottages
close to the harbour to an increasing
number of contemporary conversions
and new-builds at the top of the village.
“It is a bit of a love affair
for those who buy here, but
tolerating tricky access,
quirky parking
arrangements, low ceilings
and narrow doorways is
all part of the charm of this
wonderful village and its
active community,” says
Jo Ashby, a director at John
Bray. “We have seen groundbreaking
values achieved over the past year.” The
average property price is £662,980, up
30 per cent since 2019, according to the
property portal Rightmove.
The village sits within an area of
outstanding natural beauty with the
South West Coast Path running around
the bay. However, as a working harbour
it doesn’t have much of a beach, and
most people head south to Polzeath for
seaside fun, although Clunes has said
his favourite local beach is the less
accessible Tregardock to the north.
