JOHN MALLETT/PROSPORTS/SHUTTERSTOCK

An unbeaten century by
Brett D’Oliveira in his
first match as captain
put Worcestershire in a
strong position after
two days of their match
against Leicestershire
at Grace Road.
The 30-year-old
finished on 118 not out
as Worcestershire
scored 348. At the close,
Leicestershire were 42
for three, having been

six for three after Joe
Leach and Charlie
Morris took early
wickets. D’Oliveira is the
first member of the
dynasty to be officially
appointed captain, an
honour bestowed on
neither his grandfather,
the England batsman
Basil, nor his late father,
the all-rounder and
former academy
director Damian.

At Chelmsford, Matt
Critchley scored 132 to
add to the first-day
centuries by Nick
Browne and the former
England captain Alastair
Cook as Essex racked
up 514. Kent, without
the former England
batsman Joe Denly,
who went off with a
hamstring injury before
lunch, reached 122 for
one in reply.

233 runs behind Hampshire

We a t h e r l e y

at last fulfils

his potential

Joe Weatherley is a batsman in whom
Hampshire have long invested belief
and patience. He had not, truth be told,
scored the weight of runs expected of
him since he achieved his maiden,
indeed only, century four years ago,
although a bad ankle injury in 2019 and
the pandemic have had much to do with
that. So to make 168 in his first innings
this season was an affirmation of his
undoubted ability.
Weatherley was fortunate in two
senses. There was less assistance for
medium pace than is usually the case in
early April and Somerset’s attack,
without Craig Overton and Jack Leach,
was unthreatening.
Still, the floodlights were on when he
and Ian Holland resumed their open-
ing-wicket partnership of 109. They
were to take this to 180, the very total
their opponents had mustered the
previous day.
“Joe’s place has been under pressure
to a degree but we backed him over
time,” Giles White, Hampshire’s
director of cricket, said. “We always felt
there was a run-getter in him.”
Weatherley did not go overseas for
any cricket during the winter — who
did? — and instead moved into a flat in
Winchester and worked on his tech-
nique in the indoor nets, looking to bat
more sideways on and play the ball
later.
The upshot was 19 fours and a pulled
six from the first ball of a spell by the still
waspish Peter Siddle, which told of a
new-found confidence. It was a surprise
when he was out, not least because he
left alone a ball from the former Austra-
lia fast bowler which was too close to his
off stump.
Hampshire, for whom Holland
added 40 to his overnight 41 and James
Vince struck a half-century, gained a
lead of 248.
Somerset’s openers got through six
overs unscathed to reach 15 without
loss by the close.

Ben Foakes, England’s incumbent Test
wicketkeeper, has known some taxing
times. Since November 2018, when, in
Galle in his maiden innings, he became
his country’s twentieth batter to make a
hundred on debut, he has seen Jonny
Bairstow and Jos Buttler at various
times supplant him, with England
trading runs for glovework. Foakes has
played only ten Tests since.
Even when set to return in home
Tests last summer, a hamstring injury
resulted in him being upstaged by
James Bracey and restricted to a season
of only ten Championship innings. At
last restored for the Carribean tour, he
followed that yesterday with his first
century since Surrey’s opening fixture
last campaign, and his attritional, un-
beaten 132 from 263 balls gave his side
the ascendancy over the champions.
On a day of absorbing tactical ma-
noeuvring, Warwickshire, determined
to stem Surrey’s surge to 168 for three
between Thursday’s squalls, essentially
posted only first and third slips
throughout and Foakes escaped a very
difficult diving chance to the latter
when on 37. With only 62 added to that
point from 31 overs and both Ollie
Pope, for 58, and Jamie Smith, for
ten, gone, Surrey could have
been on 230 for six. More
disappointing still for
Warwickshire’s admira-
ble captain, Will
Rhodes, was that he
then missed a sitter
at slip, which
reprieved Foakes
again, on 54.
Ollie

Dalby, a

distinctly underrated but determined
seamer responsible for stemming
Surrey, had just removed Will Jacks,
bowled through the gate on the drive
for 19, with the second new ball. In his
next over, he was denied a deserved
fifth wicket when Foakes was again
reprieved.
Surrey should have been 260 for
seven and destined for dismissal well
before tea, but Foakes and Jordan Clark
added another careful 81 of a final 86-
run stand before Clark, swiping a leg-
side ball to backward square, granted
Rob Yates’s occasional off-spin only the
fourth wicket of his 33-match career.
When a superb bat-pad catch finally
brought the interval as Kemar Roach
went to the impressive Danny Briggs
for four, Surrey were 350 for eight and
able to expand rapidly to a declaration
at 428 that left twelve overs to be faced.
With the liberty finally to attack,
Foakes added a run-a-ball 32 to his
hundred as James Taylor, in his fifth
Championship game, hit a not-out 31
on the same day that his older brother,
Tom, made a duck for Northants.
Much of the earlier good work of a
day through which Briggs toiled to an
eventual 39 overs for three for 84 had
been undone. It began with a Hannon-
Dalby spell of 7-6-4-1 in which he
bowled Pope, playing on, but
ended still worse for Warwick-
shire when Reece Topley, with
the reply’s seventh ball,
then unseated Dom
Sibley, dragging an
inswinger onto his
stumps and out for
a golden duck.
Cruelly,
Rhodes also then
fell. Superbly held
down the legside by
Foakes off Roach, he went
eight minutes from the close.
