Great Lives
Radio 4 Extra, 6.30pm
When the soul singer
Mica Paris first dreamt of
performing, it was the
American-born French
entertainer, Resistance
agent and civil rights
activist Josephine Baker,
right, who inspired her most.
This excellent edition of the
programme first broadcast
on Radio 4 in 2018 is a
delightful précis of the
career of the first black
woman to star in a big
motion picture, the 1927
silent film Siren of the Tropics.
She became an overnight
sensation in Paris in 1925
after performing her
uninhibited routines at the
Folies Bergère in Paris.
