H
ow incensed should
England’s rugby followers
be that as this season
approaches its climax,
Eddie Jones is absent,
coaching at Suntory Goliath
in Japan? He is away at a
critical time for the
Premiership, will be unable to
monitor first-hand key late-season
form or the return to action of vital
England players, such as Manu Tuilagi
and Owen Farrell, who have been
sorely missed in all sorts of ways.
But at least he will be able to coach
the likes of Samu Kerevi, the Australia
centre, and to help any Aussie players
from a land where, in a matter of
months, England will be engaged in a
three-Test series of critical impor-
tance to the team’s long-postponed
revival.
Certainly, one must surely feel
numb at the supine lack of candour,
openness and precision from
Twickenham in what passed to be an
investigation into another miserable
England campaign in the Six Nations.
And his present absence? They should
have said no and expressed surprise
that he even asked.
Frankly, it would not have been a
surprise had Jones broken his journey
to Japan to coach somewhere else,
somewhere like Mongolia. Perhaps he
could have done a few sessions for
Ulaanbaatar. Or knocked out another
book or two.
The sense of sheer frustration at
England’s bungling stepped up
markedly last week, but not especially
because of Jones. It grew when the
RFU announced the confirmation of
the summer England tour: Perth,
Brisbane, Sydney, three decent cities
and three fine stadiums, three Tests
with the third at the Sydney Cricket
Ground.
The pain kicks in when you look
back at 2016 and the last time that
England made a short tour to that

Justified (4.40 Stratford)
Drying ground could be ideal for this
gelding and he can make the most of
what appears a lenient handicap mark.
Twice a winner on the Flat last year,
Justified has yet to reach the same level
in four starts over hurdles. However,
they have all come on a softer surface.
He is likely to improve on good
ground here and certainly looks well-in
based on his performances on the
level. He can open his account in
this sphere.
