Eyes are crucial to any classic, close-up
portrait, and Gabor has highlighted those of his
subject beautifully in this image. The catchlights
ensure this is where our attention is drawn, before
taking in the textures and tones of the features.
Some might have preferred direct eye contact, but
here, looking off to one side emphasises the sense
of contemplation, while converting to monochrome
reduces the image to its most powerful
components. The viewer is definitely left with a
sense that this is a man who has stories to tell.
