Josh Edstedt is a
portrait photographer
based in Denver,
Colorado. He’s been
a photographer for
around four years
but has only been
shooting portraits for close to two.
Josh likes to describe his style as ‘out
of the box’ portraits. You can see more

light. Their unique round
design also creates a flattering
catchlight in his subject’s eyes.
Josh initially started with the
NEO 2 in his kit bag, before
adding the AEOS later down
the line. When speaking about
the NEO 2, Josh says, ‘For such
a small light, it sure packs a
punch! I can easily fit it in my
camera bag alongside my other
gear, so I’m never without it.’
The AEOS system has also
proved its worth in weight and
portability to the photographer,
as at just 1.4kg with integrated
aluminium handles the AEOS
is easy to carry on a location
shoot even without the help
of an assistant.
As well as the lights in
his kit bag Josh also has the
mirrorless Sony A7 III and a
range of lenses including the
Sony 85mm F1.4 GM, which he
used to take the main image
here (left) of model Alexa Jean.
For this shot Josh also used his
AEOS lighting system, which
he found to be flexible. ‘I set the
light up on the ground using a
rock to simply support it and
keep in place. As the model’s
head was so low to the ground,
it would’ve been difficult to use
a light stand. The great thing
about the Rotolight AEOS
system is that it’s so portable,
and easy to set up anywhere
you need it.’
The idea behind this shoot
was to create something that
looked like a dream or someone
trapped in another world,
and luckily for Josh his
experimental idea paid off.
‘There were about 50 people in
this area at the time of the shot,
made up of photographers and
models. It just goes to show
that you don’t need much
space. You’ve just got to use
your imagination and
bring it to life.’
