ity; we know it when we appreciate the capacity we have to make
what we focus on beautiful and valued because it is imbued with
our love. Whatever is ordinary and undeveloped is the “baser”
material of everyday life, which can be turned into “gold” through
Aphrodite’s creative, alchemical influence—in the same way that
Pygmalion’s statue of Galatea was turned into a real, live woman
through love.
