T

he Stadio Giuseppe Meazza,
or San Siro as it is more
commonly known, has been
the home of both Milan and
Internazionale since 1926 and 1947
respectively, and therefore hosts all
of the city’s big derby clashes.
However, the famous old ground in
Milan now looks to be on borrowed time,
with the two clubs submitting plans to
demolish their current base and share
a new 60,000-plus capacity arena,
to be built on the same site by 2023.
For supporters of both teams it
will be hoped that a change of venue
may help to spark an upturn in their
side’s fortunes, with both Milan and
Inter struggling of late to challenge
for top honours as Juventus dominate
domestically in Italy.
Neither have won Serie A since
Milan triumphed in 2011, while it is

12 years since seven-times winners Milan
reached the Final of Europe’s biggest
club competition.
Inter, who like Milan have won 18
league titles, have not been Italian
champions since 2010 and the last
of their three European triumphs was
that same year.
In fact, the only tournament in which
the pair have managed to better Juve is
in the Club World Cup, which they have
both won once.
This season, Juventus go in search
of a ninth successive Scudetto.
Pulling out all the stops in trying
to stop them – while also attempting
to get the better of each other – the
Milanese duo have both appointed
new coaches this summer, with
Antonio Conte taking over at Inter
and Marco Giampaolo being put
in charge at Milan.

With the clubs sharing a home stadium, San Siro hosts all the city’s derbies...for now
