CHAPTER 46 TUMORS, COMMON SKIN AND HAIR FOLLICLE 673
MAB IBF9: cell surface antigen (protein) present during all phases of the cell
cycle in malignant canine melanoma cell lines; may be helpful in studying
melanoma etiology as well as aiding in immunotherapeutic options.
Basal cell tumors:
Umbrella term for a heterogenous group of tumors arising from basal cells of the
epidermis, hair follicle epithelium, sebaceous gland, or sweat glands
Basal cell tumors may be benign or malignant
May be triggered by papilloma virus

Sebaceous gland tumors:
Primarily benign (rarely malignant) tumors of the sebocytes
Forms: nodular sebaceous hyperplasia, sebaceous adenoma, sebaceous epithe-

Hair follicle tumors:
Tumors, typically benign, that arise from germinal hair follicle cells
Classified according to adnexal differentiation
Trichoepitheliomas, pilomatrixoma, trichoblastoma, tricholemmoma, trichofol-
liculoma, dilated pore of Winer.
