Potent, long-actingcorticosteroid.Antiinflammatory andimmunosuppressiveeffects are approximately 30

more than cortisol.

Antiinflammatory effectsare via inhibition ofinflammatory cells andsuppression of expressionof inflammatorymediators. Use is fortreatment of inflammatoryand immune-mediateddisease.

Side effects fromcorticosteroids are manyand include polyphagia,PU/PD, and hypothalamicpituitary adrenal (HPA)axis suppression. Adverseeffects include Glulceration, hepatopathy,diabetes, hyperlipidemia,decreased thyroidhormone, decreasedprotein synthesis andwound healing, andimmunosuppression.

Antiinflammatory effectsare seen at doses of0.1–0.2 mg/kg,immunosuppressiveeffects at 0.2–0.5 mg/kg.

Budesonide(Enterocort)

Corticosteroid.Budesonide is a locallyacting corticosteroid. It isdesigned to releaselocally – in the intestine –after oral administration.Only a small fraction isabsorbed systemically.Budesonide is used totreat inflammatory boweldisease.

No serious adverse effectsare reported. Systemicabsorption may causeglucocorticoid effects inanimals.

The capsules are designedfor human use. Whenadministering to animals,do not disrupt the coatingon the drug or theintestinal release may becompromised.

3 mg capsule

0.125 mg/kg q6–8h po.Dose interval may beincreased to every 12hours when conditionimproves.
