Fluoxetine (Reconcile[veterinary], Prozac[human])


Antidepressant drug.Used to treat behavioraldisorders, such asobsessive-compulsivedisorders and dominanceaggression. Mechanism ofaction via selectiveinhibition of serotoninreuptake anddownregulation of 5-HT1receptors.


Most common adverseeffects during field trialswere lethargy, reducedappetite, shaking,diarrhea, restlessness,aggression, andvocalization. In cats,nervousness andincreased anxiousnesshave been observed.


Because of long half-life,accumulation in plasmamay take several days toweeks.


Humanformulations: 10and20mgcapsules;4 mg/mL oralsolution. Veterinaryformulations: 8, 16,32, 64 mg chewabletablets.


Dog: 1–2 mg/kg q24h po.Cat: 0.5–4 mg/cat q24hpo.


Fluralaner (Bravecto)

Antiparasitic drug.Isoxazoline: selectiveinhibitor of arthropodGABA andL-glutamate-gatedchloride channels.

Vomiting, diarrhea.

Labeled use: flea and tickpreventative. Off-labelefficacy against sarcoptidmites and demodicosis.

Dog chews andtopical: 112.5, 250,500, 1000, and1400 mg/chew ortube. Cat topical:112.5, 250, and500 mg/tube.

Dog: 25 mg/kg q12 weekspo.

Gabapentin(Neurontin)

Anticonvulsant andanalgesic. Gabapentin isan analogue of theinhibitoryneurotransmitter GABA.The mechanism ofanticonvulsant action andanalgesic effects are notknown.

Warning: oral solutioncontains xylitol, whichmay be toxic to dogs.

Gabapentin has beenused for treatingrefractory epilepsy and asadjunct for analgesia(with other drugs).

100, 300, 400 mgcapsules. 100, 300,400, 600, 800 mgscored tablets.50 mg/mL oralsolution.

Anticonvulsant dose:2.5–10 mg/kg q8–12h po.For analgesia:10–15 mg/kg q8h po.
