Methylprednisoloneacetate (Depo-Medrol)

Depot form ofmethylprednisolone.Slowly absorbed from IMinjection site, producingglucocorticoid effects for3–4 weeks in someanimals. Used forintralesional therapy,intraarticular therapy, andinflammatory conditions.

Many adverse effects arepossible from use ofcorticosteroids.Cardiovascular problems(congestive heart failure)have been associated withuse in cats. Chronic use ofmethylprednisoloneacetate may causelong-term adverse effects.

Use ofmethylprednisoloneacetate should beevaluated carefullybecause one injection willcause glucocorticoideffects that persist forseveral days to weeks.

20 or 40 mg/mLsuspension forinjection.

Dog: 1 mg/kg (or20–40 mg/dog) IM every1–3 weeks.Cat: 10–20 mg/cat IMevery 1–3 weeks.

Methylprednisolonesodium succinate(Solu-Medrol)

Same asmethylprednisolone,except that this is awater-soluble formulationintended for acutetherapy when high IVdoses are needed for rapideffect. Used for treatmentof shock and CNS trauma.

Adverse effects are notexpected from singleadministration; however,with repeated use, otherside effects are possible.

Results of clinical studiesin animals have not beenreported. Use in animals(and doses) based onexperience in people oranecdotal experience inanimals.

1 and 2 g and 125and 500 mg vials forinjection.

For emergency use:30 mg/kg IV and repeat at15 mg/kg in 2–6h, IV.

Methyltestosterone(Android, generic)

Anabolic androgenicagent. Used for anabolicactions or testosteronehormone replacementtherapy (androgenicdeficiency). Testosteronehas been used tostimulate erythropoiesis.

Adverse effects caused byexcessive androgenicaction of testosterone.Prostatic hyperplasia ispossible in male dogs.Masculinization can occurin female dogs.Hepatopathy is morecommon with oralmethylated testosteroneformulations.
