Piroxicam (Feldeneand generic)

NSAID of the oxicamclass. Prostaglandinsynthesis inhibitor. Clinicaleffects are similar to otherNSAIDs. Piroxicam hasbeen used for treatmentof transitional cellcarcinoma in dogs.

Elimination of piroxicam isslow; use cautiously indogs. Adverse effects areprimarily GI toxicity(ulcers); see Flunixinmeglumine.

Piroxicam is primarily usedto treat arthritis and othermusculoskeletalconditions, but there arereports of its activity fortreating certain tumors(e.g., transitional cellcarcinoma of bladder).

10 mg capsules.

Dog: 0.3 mg/kg q48h po.Cat: 0.3 mg/kg q24h po.

Polysulfatedglycosaminoglycan(PSGAG) (AdequanCanine)

Large molecular weightcompound similar tonormal constituents ofhealthy joints.Chondroprotective.Inhibits enzymes that maydegrade articularcartilage. Used primarilyto treat or preventdegenerative joint disease.

Adverse effects are rare.Allergic reactions arepossible. PSGAG hasheparin-like effects andmay potentiate bleedingproblems in some animals.

Doses are derived fromempirical evidence,experimental studies, andclinical studies in dogs.Although effective foracute arthritis, may not beas effective for chronicarthropathy.

100 mg/mL injectionin 5 mL vial (forhorses, vials are250 mg/mL).

4.4 mg/kg IM, twice weeklyfor up to 4 weeks.

Praziquantel(Droncit)

Antiparasitic drug. Actionon parasites related toneuromuscular toxicityand paralysis via alteredpermeability to calcium.Used primarily to treatinfections caused bytapeworms.

Vomiting occurs at highdoses. Anorexia andtransient diarrhea havebeen reported. Safe inpregnant animals.
