sotheshowfeelsparticularlypoignant.Photographers

Stepsis a comprehensivelook
at imageryandhistoryfrom
theApollo 11 landings,andtheevents
immediatelyprecedingandfollowingit.
CuratedbyDeborahIreland,alsoknown
forherbook,HasselbladandtheMoon
Landings, theexhibitionis a must-seefor
bothspaceandphotographyenthusiasts,
witha littlebitof socialhistorythrown
in forgoodmeasure.
Ondisplayis thefirstHasselbladcamera
everusedin space,andthere’salsoa
selectionof spacedogmemorabilialoaned
bytheMartinParrFoundation(whichis
nextdoorto RPSHouseandextremely
worthyof a visitif you’rein thearea).
Theroleofwomenin spacemissions
is anotherhighlightoftheexhibitionwith
anentirepanelandportraitsofeach
ofthoseinvolved,includingMargaret
Hamilton,anAmericancomputer
scientistwhocreatedthelanding
program for the lunar modules and

whois widelycreditedwithinventing
theterm‘softwareengineering’.
Obviouslya celebrationof what
humankindwasabletoachieveat a
timewhentechnologywaslimited,the
imagesfromthehistoricalsectionof the
exhibitionpossessa kindof innocence
andwide-eyedwonderat allthenew
frontiersthatwerebeingdiscovered.
Buildingfromthat,thecontemporary
sectionof theexhibitionfeaturesthework
of British-MexicanphotographerMonica
Alcazar-Duarte.It examinesthecurrent
spacerace– ledmorebycorporations
thannation-states.Complementedbyan
augmentedrealityapp,thesectionfeels
entirelyseparatefromtherestof the
show,butgetsyourmindworkingabout
whatwe’relikelytoseein thefuture.
