The season of giving

Christmas is my favorite time of the year. I can’t say it enough.
Believe it or not, I like it when they play carols at the mall as
soon as September rolls in! I can’t wait to get my hands on
holiday food like bibingka, puto bumbong, and freshly roasted
castañas. I know it’s silly, but I love walking into Starbucks and
seeing all the baristas in their red shirts and green aprons. And
I absolutely love picking out presents for family and friends.
However, I have a love-hate relationship with gift-giving; I
hate the stress and pressure that comes with it—What to buy?

one Christmas I ended up with zero presents to give. (It goes
without saying that I felt horrible that year.) But little else gives
me more pleasure than knowing that I have picked out the
perfect something for someone.
As with the previous years, we make the stressful task of
shopping for gifts easier for you with our annual gift guide
(it’s on page 80). This year’s is extra special—food director
Rachelle Santos and editorial assistant Chino Cruz have
rounded up a list of gifts that give back. Whether they’re

textiles made by indigenous communities, or beauty products
that are eco-friendly, they’ve got one thing in common: All of

recipient, but the greater good.
Now, if you have more time to spare, why not make your
gifts with your own two hands? We have a bunch of ideas for
you: espresso hot fudge sauce, white chocolate bark, and more
on page 71; cranberry and pistachio cookies on page 48; a
majestic chocolate and orange Bundt on page 75. We’re sure
that they’ll be more precious and more meaningful to both you
and your loved ones, all because you took the time and effort
to make them yourself. After all, it is the season of giving.
Have the best of holidays, dear readers. See you in 2017.
