Yummy 201612

(coco) #1

For this issue, I...photographed
the Weekend Entertaining
section (“Snacks for Santa,”
page 45)
The best part about the
assignment was...working with
editors who have now become
my friends. I always have a good
time talking with them during
shoots then eating afterwards!
One food item that always
makes it to our family’s holiday
table is...Christmas ham. It’s not
Christmas if there’s no ham on
the table.
The blessing that I am most
thankful for this year is...my
seven-month-old son, Dutch.
What makes Christmas extra
special for me is...being around
happy people—I enjoy their
company, and I notice that
everyone is just happier during
the Christmas season!

Photographer

For this issue, I...styled the
holiday table setting for “
Days of Christmas” (page 52).
The best part about
the assignment was...
experimenting with creating a
Christmas-themed table setting
without it looking too literal.
Working with the Yummy editors
was a bonus, too!
My favorite Christmas memory
is...playing with my sisters and
cousins after opening our gifts.
Our relatives would give us the
presents right after we staged
some sort of program that
included a dance performance
and a reenactment of the nativity
story. It was a family tradition
when we were kids.
One food item that always
makes it to our family’s holiday
table is...my mom’s fruit salad.
We’d eat it at breakfast, lunch,
dinner, and for a midnight snack!
The food gift I like giving is...
chocolate. You can’t go wrong
with it; everyone loves chocolate!
The blessing that I am most
thankful for this year is...
my sister’s newly opened café,
55Square Café along Katipunan.
We worked so hard to realize
her dream.
What makes Christmas extra
special for me is...that it brings
our entire family together. My
older sisters live in Manila,
my twin sister and I live in
Mandaluyong, and my parents
stay at our family house in
Antipolo, but Christmas gives
us the perfect reason to spend
more time together.

Interior designer and
assistant style editor,
Real Living

For this issue, I...wrote
“Entertain Like a Pro” (page 78).
The best part about the
assignment was...discovering
that party planning doesn’t need
to be daunting, as long as you
pare it down to the basics: good
food and good company!
My favorite Christmas memory
is...celebrating Christmas for
̅iwÀÃÌ̈“i܈̅“ޏˆÌ̏i}ˆÀ°
I now see holiday traditions like
opening gifts and attending
Christmas Eve Mass in a different
light because of her.
The one dish that always
completes my holiday party
spread is...crispy lechon skin!
My dad is always in charge
of buying the lechon for our
Christmas family reunion, and he
makes it a point to set aside the
skin for us to eat for breakfast
the next day.
The food gift I like giving is...
cake. The less mainstream the
baker, the better. It’s always a
welcome treat, and no one can
say no to dessert!
The blessing that I am most
thankful for this year is...my
thriving freelance writing work.
I didn’t think I would survive this
long, much less be able to grow
it into a continuous stream
of projects.
Christmas is made more
special because...people seem
kinder during the holiday season.
And I love cool weather, so that’s
always a big plus!

MAITA DE JESUS
Writer

For this issue, I...wrote the
review on Cazuela for the
Restaurants section (“Spanish
Treasure,” page 91).
The best part about the
assignment was...picking out
which dishes to try from their
Spanish-, Latin American-,
ˆˆ«ˆ˜œ‡ˆ˜yÕi˜Vi`“i˜Õ°
My favorite Christmas memory
is...getting a Play-Doh Burger
King set from my parents when
I was a kid. It let me serve
“burgers” and “fries” to
my friends.
The one dish that always
completes my holiday party
spread is...fruitcake—it’s a must
for my mom to have one on the
table. Sometimes, I’d wonder if
it’s leftover fruitcake from a year
ago or if it’s brand new. Still, it
tastes good!
The food gift I like giving is...a
basket of fruits. It’s good to have
something healthy after all that
lechon and Christmas ham!
The blessing that I am most
thankful for this year is...a new
guardian angel. My dad passed
away earlier this year, and rather
than feel sadness, I’d like to think
he’s having the best vacation
ever. Miss you lots, Dad!
Christmas is extra special for
me because...it brings a sense
of hope when you realize the
magic of what can happen in the
coming year.
