Synoptic situation
A rather slack pressure pattern
dominates across the British
Isles for the rest of the week.
This will bring morning fog
patches and areas of low
cloud, breaking to leave sunny
spells and a few afternoon
showers. Rain over Scotland on
Wednesday morning, associated
with an area of low pressure
over the North Sea, will soon
clear to the east.

T
he government’s new
energy security strategy
aims to increase the UK’s
energy independence
and cut carbon emissions.
But one glaring omission from the
proposals is geothermal energy.
Geothermal technology extracts
heat from underground. In some
parts of the world power plants use
geothermal steam to run turbines
that generate electricity, making it a
useful source of reliable renewable
energy. In the UK much of the
accessible geothermal water
supplies are not hot enough to
generate power but instead can be
used as a constant supply of hot
water for buildings.
Most of the accessible geothermal
hot water in the UK could be
pumped into central heating systems
or neighbourhood heat networks.
For instance, in Southampton a
geothermal heating plant has
supplied heat to homes and
businesses for 30 years. It is
estimated that geothermal water
could satisfy the heating demands of
all buildings in the UK, which would
save about a third of all our carbon
dioxide emissions.
Interestingly, lithium can be
derived from the hot water in certain
geothermal bores in Cornwall. A
company called Cornish Lithium
aims to extract the metal from
geothermal water beneath Redruth,
as well as digging it out of the
ground at a conventional mine near
St Austell.
Geothermal plants bring up
underground saline solutions
that can be rich in lithium as
well as manganese, zinc, potassium
and boron. Cornish Lithium hopes
to produce 10,000 tonnes of lithium
a year in Cornwall, more than 10 per
cent of global consumption last year.
Demand for lithium is soaring: it is
an essential ingredient in the
batteries that power electric
vehicles.
In southern California geothermal
plants at Salton Sea — a landlocked
salt lake — generate about 434
megawatts of electricity. Estimates
suggest it could also provide enough
lithium to support America’s electric
vehicle industry for years.
