a friendwhocouldtellI wasn’t
happy.“Isthisreallywhatyou

wasa simplequestion,buttothis
dayI’mnotsurethatI would’ve
everstoppedtoaskit if hehadnot.OnceI did,I promptly
redirectedmyplansaccordingly.
Somuchofmylifeis spentbusilycheckingthings
offmyto-dolistthatit’sveryseldomthatI taketimeto
pauseandconsider:IseverythingI’mputtingonthislist
actuallyimportant?Inordertodoanysortofevaluation
—whetherit bea reviewofone’slifeorperhapsan
appraisalofa painting-in-progress(seepage8)—a
personmustfirstcometoa stop.Butmostofustendto
underestimatethevalueofa goodpause.
