328 Chapter 16
A diagnosis of ovarian cancer often means
surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.
Menopause results. An experimental
procedure has shown promise for restoring
this lost fertility. Before cancer treatment
begins, some of the patient’s still-healthy
ovarian tissue is removed and frozen. If the cancer treatment
is successful, the frozen tissue is thawed and transplanted
back into the patient. As of this writing, nine babies have
been conceived by ovarian cancer survivors who received
this type of transplant. Advocates hope the method may
soon become more widely available.

- Fertility specialists may advise a couple who wish to conceive

2. In the “fertility awareness” method of birth control, a
woman gauges her monthly fertile period by monitoring
changes in the consistency of her vaginal mucus. What
kind of information does such a method provide about
the likelihood of getting pregnant?
3. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can include mood swings,
fluid retention (edema), anxiety, backache and joint pain,
food cravings, and other symptoms. PMS usually develops
after ovulation and lasts until just before or just after
menstruation begins. Although the precise cause of PMS is
unknown, it seems clearly related to the cyclic production
of ovarian hormones. After reviewing Figure 16.3, suggest
which hormonal changes may trigger PMS.
4. Which of the reproductive technologies noted in Section
16.8 produces a child that is least related (genetically) to
the infertile couple? Would you view having a child by that
method as preferable to adopting a baby? Why or why not?
5. Lack of menstrual periods, or amenorrhea, is normal in
pregnant and postmenopausal women and in girls who
have not yet reached puberty. In females of reproductive
age, amenorrhea can result from tumors of the pituitary or
adrenals. Based on discussions in this chapter and Chapter
15, speculate about why such tumors might disrupt
monthly menstruation.
