cal genera have yet to be sequenced. The overall
taxonomic framework presented here reflects
the current uncertainty over how to split
many of the key groups, particularly in the
Saprolegniales and Peronosporales. However,
it does provide an overall taxonomic frame-
work that is underpinned by molecular data.
It is to be anticipated that the rapid advance
in comparative genomics will play a major role
in helping refine our understanding of the tax-
onomic and phylogenetic relationships in these
groups in the decade to come.
AcknowledgementsWe would like to thank our many
colleagues who have shared unpublished trees and
other information, including Arthur de Cock, Mike
Coffey, Frithjoff Ku ̈pper, Claire Gachon, Sally Glock-
ling, Mike and Deborah Hudspeth, Shigeki Inaba, Tim
James, Riays Jiang, Andre Le ́vesque, Satoshi Sekimoto,
and Chris Spies, whose helpful comments and unpub-
lished phylogenetic trees are greatly appreciated. Most
of the illustrative material was adapted from the excel-
lent line drawings of Johnson et al. ( 2002 ), John Web-
ster and the late John Karling. MT is supported by the
