❍ What are the differences between a passive robot and an active robot?
A passive robot is used as a navigational aid and is turned on for positioning and then turned off. An active robot
performs the surgery under the command of the surgeon by actually moving the tools.

❍ What are the three components of the Da Vinci system?
Surgeon’s console, video cart, and surgical cart.

❍ What are the similarities of the original Da Vinci S and the Da Vinci Si surgical system?
Three-dimensional HD vision with digital zoom features and a high-intensity xenon light source, a motorized
surgical cart with high-speed fiber optic connection as well as quickly guided instrument exchange, and extended
arm range and an improved range of motion; the surgeon’s console has ergonomic seated positioning, EndoWrist
instrumentation, motion-scaling, and tremor filtration.

❍ What is the difference between the S and Si Da Vinci surgical system?
The Da Vinci Si is more advanced than the S. The Si allows for two surgeons to perform a robotic procedure on
one patient. The surgeon’s console in the Si has the option to save setting preferences for the surgeon’s comfort.
The surgeon’s console also has ergonomic settings and touchpad controls. The finer controls allow for repositioning
of the rolling camera focus. The Si is manufactured to accept upgraded instruments.

❍ How much does the S-Type Da Vinci cart weigh and how is it maneuvered?
544 kg; it is maneuvered on a wheelbase.

❍ What does the robotic cart consist of?
Four robotic arms and a monitor.

❍ What is the function of the buttons at each joint of the arms of the robotic cart?
The buttons act as a clutch. Releasing the button locks the arm in place.

❍ What does the central robotic arm house?
The central robotic arm houses a 12-mm telescope. This telescope consists of two separate 5-mm telescopes that
allow for a three-dimensional view.

❍ What are the parts of the camera system?
Dual lens with two three-dimensional chip cameras that are spatially separated in a 12-mm casing.

❍ Why are there two complete optical systems in the camera?
To represent the left and right eye.

❍ What are the components of the robotic video cart?
The video cart contains two video camera control boxes, two light sources, and a synchronizer.
