queenwasfamousforherwisdomandkindrule—andherears. They
wereasbigaselephantears.Infact,onhotsummerdaysthequeen
wouldflapherearsfasterthanbee’swingstocoolthepalace.Having
suchgiantflapperswasn’talwaysgood.Nomatterhowmuchcotton she
stuffedintothem,thewhisperofa singleleafdriftingtoearth echoed
liketemplebellsinherenormousears.QueenMinbesufferedsuch
terribleheadachesfromthenoisesofthepalacethatit wasdifficult
forhertothinkandrulewiselyattimes.Therewasbutoneplace she
escapedthesenoisyheadaches—thepalacegardenatnight.She would
gotherewhilehersubjectsslepttosoakupthesilence.
