World Soccer - UK (2022-05)

(Maropa) #1

these years, it still thrills me to think about it.
It was magical. In the moment you score
the goal, you forget about everything else. You
start to run, to shout, then your team-mates
arrive; it’s just madness.

What do you make of Luis Enrique as
a manager – both from playing under
him at Barcelona and watching him
as the current Spain coach?
I like him. I think the decision to appoint him
was a real hit, because I know how he is and
how he works. I think he’s doing well. They
came very close to success at last summer’s
Euros. It’s about small details but he’s creating
a very good and competitive group of players
and I hope they can
fight for this year’s
World Cup.

“The Iniesta Final”...the legendary midfielder lifts the 2018 Copa del Rey trophy after Barcelona’s 5-0 win over Sevilla

Can they win it?
Sure. Why not? It’s a team that will compete.
I’ve got a lot of hope and a lot of faith in them.
Obviously, winning those type of tournaments
always depends on a lot of things that have to
go your way or situations that may see you

knocked out. But I think we have to have
a lot of trust in the Spanish national side.

What does it take to win a World Cup?
It depends on specific moments. Like whether
the ball goes in, a penalty that goes wide or
gets saved or a red card. Many things have
to align for a team to go the distance,
which is why it’s hard to win a World
Cup or other important tournaments.

“Euro 2008 changed the mentality of the
Spanish national side. We realised that
we were capable of winning important
trophies with that group of players”
