description: This is the smallest fl ying squirrel, and pos-
sibly the smallest sciurid in the world—the lesser pygmy
fl ying squirrel is the size of a small mouse. It is only known
from the type specimen. Further research on P. emiliae is
needed to determine if this species is distinct from P. hosei.
size: Sex not stated—HB 70.0 mm; T 64.5 mm; Mass 13.5 g.
distribution: P. emiliae is reported only from Sarawak
(Malaysia).
geographic variation: None.
conservation: IUCN status—data defi cient. Population
trend—no information.
habitat: The lesser pygmy fl ying squirrel is assumed to be
an arboreal forest resident at risk of habitat loss, due to
clearing for timber and agriculture. However, no informa-
tion is available on its habitat use.

Petaurillus hosei (Thomas, 1900)
Hose’s Pygmy Flying Squirrel
description: P. hosei is a small fl ying squirrel, but it is ap-
proximately twice the mass of P. emiliae. It has a dark dor-
sum, a whitish belly, and a gray to dark-colored tail, some-
times with a white tip.
size: Female—HB 87.0 mm; T 98.0 mm.
Sex not stated—HB 83.0 mm; T 88.8 mm; Mass 31.1 g.
distribution: Hose’s pygmy fl ying squirrel is found only
on the northern area of the island of Borneo, in Sabah and
Sarawak (Malaysia) and Brunei Darussalam.
