natural history: Little is known about this species, be-
cause it is rarely detected in surveys. Two important sur-
veys have turned up only two individuals.

Hagen’s Flying Squirrel
description: The hairs on the dorsal surface of the head
and back are slaty, with brown tips. A band of black-tipped
hairs runs from the middle of the nose, around the eyes, to
the ears. The hairs on the gliding membrane are black with
reddish brown tips. The underparts of the squirrel are white
with a reddish tint. The tail is brown.

distribution: Hagen’s fl ying squirrel is reported from
northern Sumatra (Indonesia) and Kalimantan (the Indone-
sian portion of the island of Borneo).

habitat: P. hageni is reported from primary forests, but
nothing else is known regarding this species’ use of ha-
bitat.

description: This large species is uniformly smoky
brownish black. The tail is indistinctly distichous. Each
cheek has a small wart, with three or four bristles on it.
