Callosciurus baluensis (Bonhote, 1901)


Kinabalu Squirrel


description: The venter of the Kinabalu squirrel is dark
reddish, sometimes with a midventral dark line. The dor-
sum is gray black, with reddish speckling on the face and
legs. It has short lateral stripes that are white over black.


size: Female—HB 244.0 mm (n = 1); T 251.0 mm (n = 1).
Male—HB 242.5 mm (n = 2); T 247.5 mm (n = 2).
Sex not stated—HB 231.7 mm (n = 2); T 236.7 mm (n = 3);
Mass 370.5 g (n = 2).


distribution: This squirrel is found above 300 m in ele-
vation in Sabah and Sarawak (Malaysia) and Kalimantan
(Indonesia).


geographic variation: We do not recognize any subspe-
cies, but other authors recognize C. baluensis baramensis of
Sarawak, which diff ers from C. b. baluensis of Sabah (Malay-
sia) by speckling on both the tail and the body.


conservation: IUCN status—least concern. Population
trend—steady.


habitat: The Kinabalu squirrel occurs in the mountains of
the northwestern part of the island of Borneo, such as at
elevations of 300–1800 m on Mount Kinabalu (Sabah, Malay-
sia), in montane oak (Quercus) and lower cloud forests.

natural history: This squirrel is mostly arboreal, but it
is reported to descend to the ground occasionally.
