152 Callosciurus quinquestriatus

quinquestriatus has sometimes been considered to be con-
specifi c with C. erythraeus (more precisely, with the C. ery-
thraeus group of subspecies).


size: Male—HB 226.5 mm (n = 2); T 202.0 mm (n = 1).
Sex not stated—HB 230.4 mm (n = 3); T 181.0 mm (n = 1).


distribution: This species is found in northeastern Myan-
mar and Yunnan (China).


geographic variation: Two subspecies are recognized.


C. q. quinquestriatus—southerly distribution. This form has
shorter black stripes (with the midventral black stripe
not extending to the inguinal region, and the lateral black


stripes extending between the forelimb and hind limb) and
longer white stripes extending to the inguinal region.
C. q. imarius—Kachin Province (northern Myanmar). This
form has longer black stripes and shorter white stripes on
the venter, with the midventral black stripe extending to
the scrotum and the lateral ones extending onto the limbs.

conservation: IUCN status—near threatened. Population
trend—decreasing.

habitat: Anderson’s squirrel occurs in mountain forests,
generally at elevations of 1000 m, and less commonly at
lower elevations.

natural history: These squirrels build nests in the outer
branches of small trees. Their diet includes vegetable matter
and insects.
