habitat: F. tristriatus inhabits the evergreen rainforests of
the Western Ghats (peninsular India). It is a resident of for-
ests and cultivated fi elds in southwestern India.
natural history: It feeds on crops, such as t he ma le fl ow-
ers of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) and grains of paddy
(cultivated rice), but it also eats termites, caterpillars, bee-
tles, scale insects, and other pests. Its nests are globular,
averaging 22 cm in diameter; are placed between 2 and 29 m
high in trees, although most were below 10 m and the me-
dian height was 5 m.

Glyphotes has one species, known only from the island of
Borneo. It is sometimes treated as a species of the genus
Callosciurus.

description: This squirrel has a deep short blunt muzzle,
a brownish fi nely speckled dorsal pelage, and a dull orange
buff venter. Its lower incisors distinctively diverge.

distribution: It is found on the island of Borneo, in the
mountains of Sabah and Sarawak (Malaysia), at elevations of
1000–1700 m.
