GOLF

MASTER

STROKE

AT 19, Aaron Jarvis
admits it’s “a little
early” to compete at
Augusta National. All
the same, in January
he automatically
qualified for both
the Masters and
the British Open by
shooting seven under
par to win the 2022
Latin America Amateur
Championship.
Jarvis came into
the tournament in the
Dominican Republic
ranked 1,669th and
watched as four
players tried to tie him
on the 18th hole after

he finished in the lead.
They all missed.
Jarvis stood with
his dad, brother and
some UNLV teammates
and couldn’t help but
think about the major

tournament bids that
would come with the
victory. History crept in,
too: No golfer from the
Cayman Islands had
ever before competed
at the Masters.

“Coming from a
small island, there’s
not much golf here,”
he says. “It means a lot
to have my country
and people supporting
me.” —Claire Kuwana
