O

nce the home of two-time
Ballon d’Or winner and
England captain Kevin
Keegan, the 1983 European
Cup winners and six-times national
champions Hamburg are one of German
football’s biggest and most successful
club sides of all time.
They play in a state-of-the-art,
57,000-capacity stadium in the western
quarter of the city and as recently as
2014 were rated one of the world’s top
20 most valuable clubs by Forbes.
Yet in the heart of Germany’s
second-biggest city there is another
club – and its proud boast is that it
is everything HSV is not.
Situated in an area that also
houses the infamous red-light
Reeperbahn district, St Pauli are
defiantly working class, with their
supporters’ famed for their anti-

racist, anti-homophobic and left-wing
views. The nearest they have ever
come to on-field success has been
the odd season in the top flight, the
last of which, in 2010, ended after just
one season as they finished bottom
of the Bundesliga.
With HSV being the only team to have
played in every Bundesliga season since
its inception in 1963, fixtures between
the two sides were relatively rare...until
Hamburg’s shock relegation in 2018
put an end to that impressive record.
So, with the city’s two teams
now in the same division, the intense
local rivalry once again becomes
football based, rather than a matter
of politics and ideology.
The latest instalment of this most
extreme of derbies will be played
at St Pauli’s Millerntor-Stadion on
September 16.
