resemble the square dance, with resolutions “demo cratically” based on the
statistical structure of information available, than an executive genome
handing up instructions to an assembly line on the basis of something
it already “knows.”
I refer to such statistical structure in vari ous places as statistical pat-
terns, mutual information, or information grammars. But in all cases, the
intelligent pro cesses condense seeming disorder and disharmony into
what Denis Noble calls Th e Music of Life (the title of one of his books).
And like music, new forms or harmonies can be readily created as de-
manded from a knowledge of relationships; novel variations that cannot
be found in genes.
