us about 40 times more brain mass in absolute terms and 240 times more
brain relative to body weight than White Sharks. Be proud.
Carcharhinid requiem sharks and dasyatid stingrays have relatively
larger brains, and odontaspid Sand Tigers have even larger brains. Mobu-
line manta and devil rays have the largest brains relative to body size among
elasmobranchs. In fact, the mobuline rays have larger relative brain sizes
than most bony fishes, and their brains are even larger than those of some
birds and mammals. (A different measure, called the encephalization quo-
tient, places White Sharks fairly low on the intelligence scale and thresher
sharks and Nurse Sharks near the top.)
