LETTER OF THE WEEK

would be really interesting
to see an article in AP on
photographer/model rights,
how you can use photos,
releases, etc.
Even if no article is
forthcoming, it would be
nice to know in this case if
the subject does have any
rights or comeback for his
photo being used.
Nick Francis

This is an interesting
question. It’s our
understanding that the
picture was not taken
for commercial use,
but uploaded to AP’s
Facebook page, from
where we then published
it. The photographer

received no payment and
didn’t specifi cally take it
for publication in a
magazine. So a model
release for this kind of
creative, candid image
should not be needed.

policy on photography at

Check your history
In all the years I have been
reading AP I have never
seen a series of articles
about the history of
photography. I have seen
reviews of vintage cameras
and so on, but never a
chronological series of

articles about the richness
of photography’s history.
Do you think it would be
possible to include such a
series in the future?
Terry Holttum

Apart from the BJP, no
other British newsstand
magazine does more
than AP to celebrate
photographic history, as
seen with our Legends of
Photography page,
regular interviews with
past masters, and
numerous articles on
vintage cameras and
processes. We’re unlikely
to run an ongoing,
encyclopedia-style piece
on photographic history
as it’s not what a weekly
magazine in a fast-
moving market is about,
but rest assured this
subject is very close to
our heart. Also look out
for our 135th
Anniversary Special
Issue, on sale on
8 October – Geoff
Harris, deputy editor

Long-exposure water
In Inbox (AP 3 August),
Philip Cadmen wrote
explaining his strong views
on the representation of
water in photography,
saying that long exposures
of water have ‘been done
to death’ and that he
prefers ‘water to look like
water’. At the other end
of the spectrum Tony
Northrup, the infl uential
YouTuber, recently spoke
in one of his and Chelsea’s
videos about how he likes
water to be smoothed out
with long exposures.
All this got me thinking
about the pentaptych of
photographs I made in
Betws-y-Coed, Wales, of
one of the waterfalls there.
It contains both long- and
