the 1/8000sec limit of the mechanical shutter
there’s the option to shoot up to 1/16,000sec
by selecting the electronic shutter option.
Whereas the EOS 80D only ever offered the
ability to shoot video at Full HD resolution, the
EOS 90D is the fi rst double-digit EOS DSLR to
feature 4K video recording. Most importantly it
uses the full width of the sensor with no crop,
which is a very welcome improvement over
Canon’s current 4K-capable APS-C cameras.
Videographers can shoot 4K video at 30/25p
and Full HD video at up to 120fps.
Headphone, microphone and HDMI ports all
feature, as does Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity,
but it does lack the latest USB Type-C
interface and doesn’t support in-camera
battery charging.
The biggest change by far on the body is the
introduction of a multi-controller joystick. It’s
the fi rst double-digit EOS DSLR to offer a
joystick for intuitively moving the AF point
around the frame and navigating the menu. All
we wish for now is for Canon to bring this
joystick to its EOS R series! Other points of
interest include a single slot at the side that
accepts UHS-II SD cards and it uses the
familiar LP-E6N battery, promising an
impressive 1,300-shot stamina. The camera is
compatible with the same Canon BG-E
(£199) battery grip that is used by both the
EOS 70D and 80D.
Available body only for £1,210, the EOS
90D is due to go on sale in September.

ALONGSIDE the EOS 90D, Canon has
also launched an updated version of its
enthusiast-focused APS-C mirrorless
camera. Just not the one we expected, as
instead of revamping the SLR-shaped EOS
M5, it’s instead come up with the EOS M
Mark II. This is a small fl at-bodied camera
with a removable electronic viewfi nder that
slides onto the hotshoe. We’d rather see one
built-in – if not central, then a pop-up corner-
mounted unit like on the recent G5 X Mark II.
Internally the EOS M6 Mark II uses the
same imaging core as the EOS 90D, most
notably Canon’s new 32.5MP APS-C sensor.
This benefi ts from Dual Pixel CMOS
technology that allows every sensor pixel to
be used for phase detection. As a result, the
camera offers 5,481 AF points covering 88%
of the sensor width and all of its height. It also
sports this year’s must-have feature, Eye
D ete c t i o n A F.
Equally impressive is the continuous
shooting speed, which thanks to the Digic 8
processor reaches 14 frames per second.
Turn on Canon’s new raw burst mode, and
this jumps to a remarkable 30fps. Meanwhile
4K video is available using the full sensor
width, with a microphone socket for high-
quality sound (but sadly no headphone port).
In terms of design, the Mark II sports a
revised control layout that borrows elements
from the full-frame mirrorless EOS R range. It
has twin electronic dials on the top plate, with
a Dial Func button in the centre of the latter
giving quick access to a range of photographic
functions. Unfortunately though, this results in
the loss of the M6’s exposure compensation
dial. Canon has also added an AF-ON button
that’s surrounded by an AF/MF switch, but
has failed to include a focus-point joystick,

The removable EVF-DC2 viewfinder will be
included in a kit with the 15-45mm lens

relying on touchscreen control instead.
One clear improvement is the deeper
handgrip, with a well-defi ned space on the
back for your thumb. As a result, typically for
Canon, the EOS M6 Mark II fi ts much better
in your hand than most other fi rms’ small
models. It’s due to go on sale in September
priced £870 body only, or £1,120 in a kit with
the EVF-DC2 viewfi nder and 15-45mm lens.
