Gaoni and Mechoulam in ( 1964 ), whereD^9 -THC was isolated from the hexane
extract of hashish using column chromatography over florisil. A crystalline
3,5-nitrophenylurethane derivative of THC was prepared followed by alkaline
hydrolysis for further purification. IR and NMR analysis were used to prove the
purity ofD^9 -THC (Gaoni and Mechoulam 1964 ). Korte et al. ( 1965 ) reported the
isolation ofD^9 -THC from the crude extracts of the female inflorescence ofC. sativa
indica andC. sativanon indica. The extracts were purified by using chromato-
graphic techniques to getD^9 -THC which was proved to be identical with that
described by Gaoni and Mechoulam ( 1964 ) (Korte et al. 1965 ). In 1967,
Mechoulam and Gaoni reported the isolation ofD^9 -THC from the acidic fraction of
