Since rhetorical poetics is interested in the ideal of fully understanding narra-
tive communication as well as the practical details of actual somebodies com-
municating with actual others, I regard both the analytical separation and the
inescapable linkage of authorial and actual audiences as both necessary and
beneficial features of approaching narrative as rhetoric.
