cultural ceremonies, with snares and other pig traps recently
observed in many areas (Oliver 2008; Balete et al. 2013a, 2013b;
MBCFI 2014). Hunting pressure from Mangyan communities in
Mt. Calavite is somehow reduced as many indigenous commu-
nities there have been converted by missionaries to the Adventist
belief, which recommends abstinence from red meat including
pork, although other non-indigenous, non-Adventist commu-
nities are still reported to poach wild pigs (D. G. Tabaranza, per-
sonal observation; MBCFI 2014; Schutz, personal observation).

Status in Captivity
Very little information is available. Several reports of captive
individuals are reported in local Mangyan (indigenous) and
non-indigenous communities in many sites. However, as dis-
cussed by Gonzalez et al. (1999), reports of wild pigs kept in cap-
tivity turned out to be hybrids of free-ranging domestic breeds
(Figure 16.8).
