recorded from wild Babirusa until after they had been witnessed
in zoos. Similarly, studies on captive babirusa described a mac-
roscopic and microscopic stomach anatomy unlike that in any
other mammal thus far, giving important clues as to dietary rec-
ommendations for captive individuals (Leus et al. 2001, 2004;
Macdonald et al. 2008b). Much still remains to be learned from
the wild pigs and peccaries in human care.

Acknowledgements
I would to thank the editors for the opportunity to include a
chapter on ex-situ conservation in this important new publica-
tion on the otherwise often somewhat neglected groups of wild
pigs and peccaries. I would also like to thank the range state

ex-situ programmes for Chacoan peccary, pygmy hog, and Javan
warty pig for providing me with updated population informa-
tion and photographs. My gratitude also goes to the EAZA and
AZA TAG chairs and the studbook keepers and programme
coordinators, for their hard work on behalf of these taxa and for
providing me with photographs and/or population information
that could not be found in published sources. Christian Kern,
Planckendael/Jonas Verhulst, Chester Zoo, and Emmen Zoo/
Rob Doolaard gave permission for the use of the photos that
were finally selected to be included in the chapter, for which I
am very grateful. My colleagues at the EAZA Executive Office
were extremely helpful in tracking down various pieces of more
general information.
