I got my first camera, a
Kodak Brownie, from
my father when I was 7.
It was a film camera, so
it was costly, and I had
to wait a week to get
results. Now I exclusively
use digital because I
can see immediate

World War II in Colour. It’s fascinating to see the strategies
and the complicated communication methods each coun-
try used back then. My father fought in World War II, but
seldom spoke about it. From the few experiences he shared,
some scenes resembled what he endured in combat. Watch-
ing it made me feel as if I were there, with actual footage
from the front lines.Getting the Shot
In 2018, I f lew with my
friend Ron Morrell in
his T-28, wing-to-wing,
next to one of the few
remaining active B-17s
in the U.S. We f lew over
Seattle, where I photo-
graphed the B-17 over
the Space Needle and
the University of Wash-
ington. The next year,
I once again captured
the plane f lying over
Wa sh i ng t on’s c apit ol

knowing nothing! I’ve been fortunate and persistent
enough to gain the trust of pilots who want and need
my photo services. And after years of shooting aerials
from helicopters, I decided to try flying on my own. So
I got my pilot’s license and became involved with the
Washington Pilots Association and other flying clubs,
learning and flying as much as possible.MY PATH TO BEING A PROThe Gear I Can’t Work Without
My Nikon D7200 camera and 18-300mm zoom lens allow me to
capture the closeups and long shots I need. I never have to miss a
moment, change lenses, or take my eye away from the viewfinder.
And of course, my noise-canceling A20 Bose headset helps me
effectively communicate with my pilot.

the women’s altitude record. I
would ask her, what compelled
her to fly? How old was she
when she first had that glimmer in her eye for flight? And how
did she overcome the obstacles of being a young female pilot?
