Designing the beautiful game

I

n November, the 2022 men’s football World Cup
kicks off in Qatar. In the run-up to that tournament,
London’s Design Museum is hosting the
first big exhibition on the design of
the world’s most popular sport.
With more than 500 historical
objects, this exhibition will show
how design has made football a
beautiful game, from badges and
boots to shirts and stadiums.
Created in partnership with
the National Football Museum in
Manchester, England, this exhibition is
divided into five sections: Performance,

Identity, Crowds, Spectacle and Play. Performance
will look at how boots and balls have evolved over
the years to make the game more fun and
faster. Objects on display include the
footballs used in the very first World
Cup final in 1930 and match boots
worn by players such as Argentina
and Paris Saint-Germain star
Lionel Messi. Visitors will learn the
story of why a pair of Adidas boots
had to be modified with a Nike logo.
In Identity, learn more about
how football has brought communities
together and see fan-produced artworks.

Crowds recreate the matchday experience, taking
you inside some of the world’s biggest and most
interesting stadiums. This includes a new, eco-
friendly wooden stadium that has been planned for
English club Forest Green Rovers.
Spectacle shows how organised tournaments
have made football the greatest show on Earth, while
Play takes you back to the game itself, as well as the
board games and video games it has inspired. Along
the way, a trail will give you the chance to design your
own kit and build your own stadium.
Football: Designing the Beautiful Game is at the
Design Museum in London until 29 August. Find out

Three famous football designs

Shirt
The Argentinian
national team has
one of the world’s
most famous
football shirts; the white
and sky-blue striped kit is
inspired by the country’s
flag. Argentina has won
two World Cups. The
current No. 10 is Lionel
Messi, one of the world’s
top players.

Stadium
Opened in 2019, Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium in
London has a unique feature – the pitch can fold
away so it can host American football games as well
as Premier League matches.

Boot
These boots, designed by Puma, were worn by the
Brazilian star Pelé. He wore the boots at the 1970
World Cup in Mexico, which Brazil won. Pelé was
named the best player of the tournament.

German team St Pauli adopted
the skull and crossbones as a logo.
