Rublev tops Djokovic

for Serbia Open title

Andrey Rublev defeated
Novak Djokovic, 6-2, 6-7 (7-4),
6 -0, on Sunday in Belgrade to win
the Serbia Open for his third title
of the season.
The second-seeded Russian
dug deep to stop Djokovic from
mounting another comeback as
he prevented the top-ranked Serb
from claiming his first title of
2022.
The 24-year-old Rublev looked
fitter in their third set as he
closed out the win in 2 hours 24
minutes. Djokovic, 34, appeared
affected by the effort he put in to
level the match in the second-set
tiebreaker.
Djokovic already had came
back from a set down in each of
his three matches at his
hometown tournament,
defeating Laslo Djere, Miomir
Kecmanovic and Karen
Khachanov on his way to the
final in what were only his fifth,
sixth and seventh matches of the
year....
Top-ranked Iga Swiatek
defeated Aryna Sabalenka, 6-2,
6-2, in the final of the Stuttgart

(Germany) Open for her fourth
title of the year.
The Polish player stretched her
winning run to 23 matches by
beating last year’s finalist in her
own tournament debut in 1 hour
24 minutes.
Swiatek has won her past
seven finals in straight sets....
Exactly 17 years ago, an
1 8-year-old Rafael Nadal was
starting to attract the attention of
the tennis world by winning the
Barcelona Open and making it to
the top 10 for the first time.
Carlos Alcaraz followed in the
footsteps of his hero, also
winning his first Barcelona title
and cracking the top 10 men’s
rankings for the first time at the
same age.
Alcaraz continued his
impressive run by beating Pablo
Carreno Busta in straight sets for
his third title of the season,
winning the all-Spanish match,
6 -3, 6-2, after having made it to
the final a few hours earlier in a
semifinal match postponed from
Saturday because of rain.

AUTO RACING
Formula One champion Max
Verstappen dominated in a Red
Bull rout of Ferrari at the Emilia-
Romagna Grand Prix in Imola,

Italy, much to the dismay of the
sea of red-clad “tifosi.”
Verstappen won from the pole,
logged the fastest lap and picked
up his second win of the season
while leading teammate Sergio
Pérez to the first one-two Red
Bull finish since Malaysia in 2016.
“Lovely Sunday,” Verstappen
radioed his Red Bull team on
what was actually a dreary,
overcast and misty race day.
The Dutchman scored
maximum points on the weekend
— he also won the sprint
qualifying race Saturday — and
led Red Bull in its
embarrassment of Ferrari in
what the Italian scuderia hoped
to be its celebratory weekend at
home.
Lando Norris was third for
McLaren.

PRO BASKETBALL
Shatori Walker-Kimbrough
scored a team-high 13 points as
the Washington Mystics dropped
their first preseason game, 88-69,
to the Atlanta Dream on Sunday
in College Park, Ga.
Washington shot just 26 for 80
(32.5 percent) from the field.
Megan Gustafson (11 points)
was the only other Mystics player
in double figures.

Shakira Austin, the No. 3 pick
in this month’s draft, scored just
three points in 23 minutes but
grabbed 12 rebounds and
blocked six shots, both game
highs.
Washington returns to the
court Wednesday to host the
Minnesota Lynx at 11:30 a.m. The
team’s regular season opener is
scheduled for May 6 at home
against the Indiana Fever.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
North Carolina guard Caleb
Love is returning for his junior
season, a huge boost for the Ta r
Heels after their improbable run
to the NCAA championship
game.
The 6-foot-4 Love announced
his decision in a social media
video on the final day for players
to declare for the NBA draft.
Love’s return means the Ta r
Heels will bring back every
starter except floor-stretching big
man Brady Manek....
Center Hunter Dickinson
announced he will return for his
junior year at Michigan.
The 2020 All-Met Player of the
Year out of DeMatha averaged
18.6 points and 8.6 rebounds last
season for the Wolverines....
Duke freshman AJ Griffin is

heading to the NBA, becoming
the fifth Blue Devils player in the
past week to declare early for the
draft.
Duke said the 6 -6, 222-pound
wing regarded as a potential
lottery pick plans to hire an
agent.
Griffin’s NBA move follows
that of 7-1 sophomore Mark
Williams, 6-10 star freshman
Paolo Banchero, 6-5 wing
Wendell Moore Jr. and 6-5
guard Trevor Keels....
Kansas guard Ochai Agbaji
announced his decision to begin
his professional career.
A super-senior season was
available to the first-team all-
American.

CYCLING
Rising star Remco Evenepoel
posted the biggest win of his
career with a solo victory in
cycling’s oldest classic — the
Liege-Bastogne-Liege race — as
Belgian riders swept the podium
places in their home country.
A versatile rider widely
regarded as one of the most
promising talents of his
generation, Evenepoel, 22,
triumphed in “La Doyenne” at his
first attempt.
Evenepoel added his name to a
list of winners that includes
cycling greats Eddy Merckx and
Bernard Hinault.
