history of science and American history courses at Western Oregon Uni-
versity, Oregon State University, and the University of Portland. His fi rst
book, Science Talk: Changing Notions of Science in American Culture (Rutgers,
2007), examines debate about the nature of science and its implications in
American popular literature during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
His next project looks at the history of mass panic and its relationship to
science and technology.
