Biology 12

(vip2019) #1
Unit 3 Project • MHR 323

Design Criteria

A.Your presentation should combine
information you obtain through your research
with material you have learned in each
chapter of this unit.

B.Include visuals to support your presentation.
Some examples might be graphs showing
the incidence of the cancer among different
demographic groups or in different parts of
the country, models illustrating the difference
between normal and cancerous cells, or
illustrations showing how environmental
factors can act as mutagens to trigger
the cancer.

C.Explain how changes in treatment and
preventive measures are related to advances
in our understanding of molecular genetics.
This might include a description of key
experiments that have helped researchers
learn more about this form of cancer.

D.In addition to your presentation, you should
prepare and submit the following written
materials:
an introduction that identifies your team
members and explains how and why you
selected your topic;
a research log that records your progress,
including any difficulties you encountered
and how you dealt with them; and
a bibliography that lists the research
sources you used, along with the names
of people you interviewed as part of your
research.

Action Plan

1.As a class, decide how you will evaluate the
presentations.

2.Decide on the particular form of cancer to
study. Then develop a plan to find, collect,
and organize the information you will need.
Remember to keep a list of all your references
and interview subjects for your bibliography.

3.Identify the materials you will need to
prepare your report and presentation,
including any props, visual aids, and
equipment.

4.As you collect information, think about
how your presentation might address
issues such as the following:

What genetic, environmental, or other
factors are associated with this cancer?
Is there a main group that is at risk of
developing this cancer, such as people
with a certain diet or lifestyle? Has this
group changed over time? If so, how?
What is the state of current research on
the causes, prevention, and treatment of
this cancer? What have initiatives like the
Human Genome Project contributed to
this work?
What are some of the social, ethical, and
legal issues associated with this research?
What are some common beliefs about the
causes, prevention, and treatment of this
cancer? Which of these beliefs can be
supported by scientific evidence?
What do you think are some of the most
promising avenues for research into the
future treatment or prevention of the
cancer you are studying? What are some
of the technical or ethical hurdles that
need to be overcome?
Have your teacher check and approve
your action plan. As you carry out your
plan, note any changes that you make
along the way.
Once you are satisfied that you are properly
prepared, make your presentation to
the class.

Evaluate
1.Evaluate your own work and presentation
using the evaluation criteria developed by
your class. How effective do you think your
presentation was?

2.Evaluate the presentations made by other
members of your class. Were there any
common themes or areas of significant
difference among the reports presented by
different members of your class?

3.After seeing all the presentations, what
changes would you make to your own
report if you were to present it again?
Explain your reasons.

4.How did working on this project help
you think about what you have learned
in this unit?
