Edward J. Calabrese is a board certified toxicologist who is professor of
toxicology at the University of Massachusetts School of Public Health,
Amherst. Dr. Calabrese has researched extensively in the area of host fac­
tors affecting susceptibility to pollutants, and is the author of more than
270 papers in scholarly journals, as well as 15 books, including Principles of
Animal Extrapolation; Nutrition and Environmental Health, Vols. I and II;
Ecogenetics; Safe Drinking Water Act: Amendments, Regulations and
Standards; Petroleum Contaminated Soils, Vols. 1, 2, and 3; Ozone Risk
Communication and Management; Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils, Vol­
ume 1; and Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils and Groundwater, Volume 1.
His most recent books include Multiple Chemical Interactions; Air Toxics
and Risk Assessment; Alcohol Interactions with Drugs and Chemicals', and
Regulating Drinking Water Quality. He has been a member of the U.S.
National Academy of Sciences and NATO Countries Safe Drinking Water
committees, and has been appointed to the Board of Scientific Counselors
for the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). Dr.
Calabrese also serves as Chairman of the International Society of Regula­
tory Toxicology and Pharmacology’s Council for Health and Environmen­
tal Safety of Soils (CHESS) and Director of the Northeast Regional Envi­
ronmental Public Health Center at the University of Massachusetts.
