lthough my name appears on the cover of this book, I could
not have written it without help from numerous people
and several institutions. Some of these people shared their
knowledge and experience of disasters, some covered my classes
while I visited hurricane-stricken regions, some traveled with me
to those regions, and others read all or parts of the book in early
stages. I would like to thank Jonathan Balcombe, Jenny Bennett,
Theo Capaldi, Bridgette Chesne, Susie Coston, Kevin Dennison, Ron
Desnoyers, Debra Parsons Drake, Lynelle Dupepe, Ali Hatch, Hal
Herzog, Keith Larson, Sean Angus MacKinnon, Sally Matluck, John
Pippin, Trish Ritterbusch, Brad Shear, and Kim Sturla. I thank the
Department of Sociology and the Natural Hazards Research Center
of the University of Colorado, the Humane Society of Boulder Val-
ley, and the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators. I also thank
Marc Bekoff, who championed this book throughout the process,
and Janet Francendese, of Temple University Press, who provided
valuable editorial guidance and support. Finally, the words thank
you cannot convey the deep appreciation and gratitude I owe my
husband, Marc Krulewitch.
