Your charity knits

It’s always great seeing what you’ve been knitting for those in need.
We love to see your charity knits, so please keep sending them in!

MAKES FOR THE SEA
I knit balaclavas, hats, socks and cowls
for The Mission to Seafarers, the charity
that supports people who work at sea.
My husband worked at sea for more than
40 years – those guys work in the most
challenging weather conditions and really
welcome some hand-knitted garments.
I’ve supported the charity since the 1970s
when I took my husband back to his ship
in Liverpool docks. It was the day before
Christmas Eve and he was going to be
away for five months. The chaplain gave
him a hand-knitted hat, which I thought
was a lovely gesture, and something I’ve
never forgotten. The charity supplies free
post labels and you can use any pattern
you like. I always receive a thank you
letter for my work and enjoy wondering
where in the world my knits end up! It’s
nice to know they will make a dierence
and be appreciated. I’ve included a very
unflattering picture of me in the last
balaclava I sent o. Here I am today, still
knitting away for this cause!

FROM THE CAPITAL
Here are some mini hats for Innocent’s
The Big Knit for Age UK that have been
knitted by the Ktog knitting group of
WI Finchley in London. We also make
bonding squares, blankets for Bliss
boxes and blankets for the local leisure
centre for the elderly, and we’re fans

of knitting quirky marine creatures to
decorate our market stall with
to help raise awareness of the negative
eect of microfibres in washing
machines. May Ktog continue to cast on
and on!

ACROSS THE AGES
This is June, a devoted knitter who
will turn 90 next month! We have a
fabulous knitting group here in Honiton,
East Devon, where we support a range
of charities. The projects we work on
include twiddle mus for dementia
patients and items for babies in our local
neonatal unit. The ages of the members
in the group range from 14 to 90 years
of age, with up to 22 members meeting
at the café in The Little Shop of Seasons
4:30-6:30pm on Thursdays.
