gnergy tetrahedron, including the emergence of life, Homo sapiens,
and human culture. (For a more detailed account of this figure, see
pp. 234–7 in [7].)
When the gnergy concept was first invoked to account for life on the
molecular and cellular levels, the emphasis was on the complementarity
between information and energy (i.e., gnergy), but when an attempt was
made to extend the gnergy concept to the origin of the Universe, it became
evident that the information–energy complementarity (which can be rep-
resented as a triangle comprising three vertices of gnergy, energy, and
information); see Figure 10.28 needed to be augmented by supplemen-
tarity relations between energy and matter on the one hand and between
information and life on the other. The supplementarity relation between
energy and matter is given by the well-known equation of Einstein,
E = mc^2 , as pointed out in Section 2.4. This led me to consider the pos-
sibility that a similar relation may hold between information and life.
Thus, I found myself asking the following question: Just as physicists
consider matter as highly concentrated energy, can life be considered as
highly concentrated information? Having found no legitimate reason to
reject this possibility, I decided to accept as a hypothesis the supplemen-
tarity relation between information and life in analogy to the supplemen-
tarity relation between energy and matter (see Figure 1.A5 on p. 234 in
[7]) and coined the term “liformation” (see Figure 10.27). To represent the
combined complementarity and supplementarity relations diagrammati-
cally, I chose the tetrahedron, which is the 3-dimensional analog of the
